Answering the big 2009 pre-season questions

1)  Will Florida go undefeated this year?

No.  I know it sounds bold.  Especially since they almost did it last year.  But the key word there is "almost."  Last year Florida lost in the Swamp to a 9-4 Ole Miss team that couldn't beat Wake Forest, Vanderbilt or South Carolina, and this years Gator offense isn't as good as last year (Harvin is not as easily replaced).  But the real reason I say that Florida will not run the table, is arrogance.  The team is extremely arrogant, from head coach Urban "Cry Me a River" Meyer to QB Tim "Man of Steel" Tebow, down to the newest freshman recruit.  Before the comments start coming in about Tebow's humility, ask yourself, does a humble man promise, one year in advance that he will come back and personally ensure an undefeated season next year?  No.  An extremely arrogant man, like Tim Tebow, does that, and did that after last seasons heart-crushing loss to Mississippi.  To think that you can possibly make that promise without knowing who will be returning, what next year's opponents will look like, who will be injured, etc. shows a kid who thinks he can do it all by himself.  And as Coach Meyer has pointed out, Tebow gets extremely angry at his teammates when he thinks they don't work as hard as him, which once agin shows his arrogance.  It is that arrogance, that will cost Florida at least one game this year, and most likely, once again when they least expect it.  I'm guessing against either Tennessee or Florida State.  Maybe Tennessee, because they will be so focused on scoring 50 points they'll forget to score the first 49.  Maybe Florida State because, they will be at home, against a much weaker opponent, looking ahead to the SEC Championship game.  It happens every year.  Like in 2006 when USC lost to UCLA.  Or back in 2003 when Oklahoma lost to K-State.  Or in 1993 when Notre Dame lost to BC. The big can't-be-beat teams always seem to look ahead to the bigger upcoming game, and lose the one they are currently playing.

2)  Who will get screwed out of the National Championship game this year?

It's bound to happen.  It does every single year.  Last year it was Texas, this year it will be...who knows, but somebody will get screwed out of the National Championship game.  My guess will be USC.  But even after playing the number 11 team in the Rose Bowl, the AP will still award them the National Championship and though they didn't even play in the National Title game, will still be called the National Champions by all sports talking-heads forevermore.  Sheesh.

3)  Will Bobby Bowden retire this year?

No.  as I pointed out in an earlier post, he has one more year after this one, until Jimbo Fisher must officially take over, and he wants one more run at the title.  Since he's already conceded that this year's team is not good enough to make a run at the title, that leaves us with next year's team.  Which means he will not retire until after next season.  I'm reserving my 2010 FSU/UF tickets now, because that might very well be Bobby's absolute last home game EVER.

4)  How long will the Michigan faithful give Rich Rodriguez to turn the program around?

This year.  That's it.  After last year's miserable 3-9 season, if the Wolverines don't show dramatic improvement, ie: at least a winning season, ole Richy is gonna be lookin' for another job.  But don't worry coach, the Notre Dame position might be open.  The new allegations that Michigan has violated the NCAA rules by exceeding practice time limits will give the alumni, and school the excuse they need to fire him.  But they won't, if he shows vast improvement.  5-7 ain't gonna cut it.  And 3-9 sure as hell won't.

5)  Will Urban Meyer jump ship if he has a perfect season?

Why not?  What else does he have to prove at Florida.  Maybe he'll take the newly opened Michigan or Notre Dame job (just a small prediction here).  Maybe he'll go to the NFL.  But then again, maybe he'll be smart, and know that unless he  is caught with the AD's wife he has the UF job for life (and maybe even if he's caught with the AD's wife).  So why blow a good thing?  Because, the arrogant coaches are never smart when it comes to things like that.  Look at Spurrier, Saban, and Petrino.   Personally, if I were him, and i wnet undefeated this year, I'd retire and go get some cushy gig at ESPN, or just sail around the world with my boat load of money.

6)  Who will win the Heisman?

Colt McCoy...unless it's Tim Tebow.   You liked the way I hedged my bets there din't you.

7)  Will the Mountain West ever be admitted as a BCS conference?

Yes, if BYU runs the table this season.

8)  Will Florida be crowned greatest team of the decade?

No.  After Tebow graduates, and Urban moves on to the Notre Dame job, the ESPN talking heads will go back to licking Pete Carroll's butt, and USC will be proclaimed the greatest team of the decade, if not the millenium.  But, if Florida runs the table and wins it all this year, they will most likely deserve the title.  On the other hand, if another team wins...say Texas...they might have a good argument to be the best team this decade.  Personally, my choice for greatest team of the decade, is Nick Saban.

9)  Who will win the 2009 Play Pick'em College Football Pick'em and the two tickets to the BCS Championship?

Unfortunately, not me.

My brother owns a carpet cleaning company down in Pensacola, so he is a huge Florida State fan. I personally cannot stand the team's lack of sportsmanship and pompous attitude. I'm glad that they didn't go undefeated, and really had a mediocre record for 2009.
