Penn State: Season Preview

JoPa is back for yet another year and should have another good season.  I'm not sure if Penn State will be good enough to beat Ohio State again and repeat as Big Ten champs, but they should have a good season, if for no other reason than they play a cupcake schedule that boasts only two Preseason Top 25 opponents (both at home), and an out of conference schedule that includes pushovers like Akron, Syracuse, Temple and Eastern Illinois.

Daryll Clark will be returning at QB to lead an offense that keeps only 5 starters.  So even with talented veterans at QB and RB, there are still some serious questions on the offense.  First is the receiving corps, after three of the best receivers in school history graduated last year.  Second is the line, where only center Stefen Wisniewski started last season.  Things could be shakey for this young offense, especially early in the season.  So its lucky for them that they don't play anyone significant until Iowa comes to town, and they don't go on the road until October.

The defense is in a similar questionable state, returning only 4 starters.  The biggest question there will be the Lions' secondary, with no starters returning, and very little playing time between them.  The front four should still dominate with veteran tackles and they are backed up by veteran LBs.

Overall the Lions should have a good year, since besides Ohio State, Iowa is the only real threat on the schedule.  Though Coach Paterno should look out for Michigan State in the last game of the season.  The Spartans might be looking for the upset at home after Penn State thrashed them last year 49-18.  And Illinois might make some noise when the Lions come to town as well.  But my guess is Penn State will end with a very good record despite the lack of experience on the team.
