Paterno says Bowden should keep wins

In an Interview with the Reading Eagle, Penn State Coach Joe Paterno told Rich Scarcella that the NCAA shouldn't take wins from Florida State coach Bobby Bowden after some student athletes were caught cheating.

"I've known Bobby for 40 years. Sue and I have gone on a lot of trips with Bobby and his wife, Ann. I think Bobby is not filled up with himself. He's my kind of guy. He doesn't go around blowing his horn. He's very humble and a very, very religious guy. He's very, very principled. He's not preaching. He's not trying to convert people. He's just a good person and a heck of a football coach.

The NCAA is going to do what it's going to do, but I would hope they would not take away 10 or 12 wins away from him. I don't think that's fair. He coached the team he had; they played against people, and they won. They ought to be wins for them."

Many Penn State fans disagree with the coach though.  When asked about that Paterno replied, "Fans are fans. I appreciate their loyalty to us. That's not my cup of tea. When they put me underneath, it won't make any difference whether I'm one win ahead or 10 wins behind. I've enjoyed my career. I've been lucky. I've never really thought about that kind of legacy."

Joe Paterno is currently the all-time winningest coach in college football, with Bobby Bowden a close second.  If the NCAA is successful in stripping Bowden of his wins, then Joe Paterno will be completely out of reach.

The NCAA punished FSU after students athletes were caught cheating on a music test.  While neither Bowden, the coaching staff or the school was involved the NCAA punished the entire athletic department with sanctions, probation and sacrificed wins.  FSU is appealing the wins being taken.  And in my opinion they should.  why punish the coaches and honest players for something a few bad apples did.  I wonder how Penn State fans would feel if it were Paterno losing wins.
